Telephone Information

Using a Mexican Cell Phone

To pay for cell phone calls, unless you have a monthly contract, you will need to buy a "ficha" (also called "Amigo") card - available at convenience stores (Oxxo or Extra), gas stations (Pemex), department stores (Sanborns), even at intersections.

To check for messages, dial *86. 1=listen, 2=save, 3=erase.

Calling Mexican Phones

When you call someone in Mexico, it is important to know whether the number is a "land line" or a cell phone. If you are calling a cell phone, (a) you must dial a special cell network prefix, and (b) the caller is charged for the full cost of the call (about MXP$1.85 or approx 17¢/minute).
